Bringing the River Tyne to life.

Active Tyne CIC is a new community organisation exploring how the River Tyne can play a bigger role in city life, with improved access for sport, leisure and recreation.

We are starting to bring together river users, communities, businesses and public organisations to share ideas, build partnerships and help more people enjoy one of the North East’s greatest natural assets.

A river for everyone

The Tyne runs through the heart of our region, but opportunities to get onto, into and alongside the river remain surprisingly limited.

Active Tyne is at the beginning of its journey. We want to build a stronger community around the river, make existing opportunities easier to discover and work together to understand and overcome the barriers to greater recreational use.

01. Connect

We are building a partnership of clubs, community groups, sports organisations, businesses and public bodies with a shared interest in the River Tyne.

By bringing people together, we can share knowledge, identify opportunities and start tackling issues that no single organisation can solve alone.

02. Activate

Rowing, sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, walking, festivals, city cruises and more are already happening every day.

However, there is enormous potential for more activity. We want to celebrate what already exists, support river users and explore what could come next.

03. Improve

Using the Tyne should be easier. We want to work with partners to explore better access, clearer practical information and develop a better understanding of water quality.

That includes contributing to Newcastle’s ambitions as part of the global Swimmable Cities movement.

The Tyne has more to offer

For generations, the River Tyne has shaped the identity, economy and communities of the North East.

Today, rowing clubs, sailing clubs, paddlers, boat operators, watersports organisations and community groups are already making use of the river. But access can be difficult, facilities are fragmented and information is often hard to find. We also have no data on water quality.

Active Tyne has a simple ambition a cleaner, more accessible and more active river, for all to enjoy.
